Geeking Update

Ξ November 11th, 2008 | → | ∇ Geek |

I’ve had to do a couple of updates this weekend and tonight:

  • Performance on Alexandria dropped with the addition of the external hard drives to add storage. I’ve removed the drives for the time being.
  • I will have to source additional memory from another system (more than likely either shockwave or tsunami Mk. 1) to add to Alexandria. With the installation of Sharepoint, I believe that system resources are being taxed too much. I’ll do some more tests later this week.
  • I have also begun uploading/organizing the image collection on Alexandria’s Sharepoint.  Once I have enough of a starting point, I will be opening a Beta Test to a handful of outside users.
  • One major accomplishment: Alexandria can now stream Blu-Ray movies (really they’re .mkv files)directly to the TiVo, without the need of a Blu-Ray player. W00t!!!

  • Hurricane, the newest addition has been birthed. She will be tasked as a PC that will be fitted into Ronan (Amante’s Saturn VUE).

I’ve also created a new Amazon Wish List for my current Geek Projects. Christmas is coming up.

Once again you have confused me and impressed my daughter at the same time - especially with the blu-ray thing.

And am I reading that right - you’re putting a computer into Amante’s car?

It isn’t too confusing… all that I am doing is using a tool to get Blu-Ray movies (or .mkv videos) to be displayed via my TiVo. In the past, what I’ve had to do was hook up a computer to the TV and then extend out the display to the TV, then play the video on the laptop. This just removes one hop. Although, the downside of this is that I’m transferring anywhere between 4-10gb of data from Alexandria to the TiVo, and on a 100mb wired network connection, it takes A LONG time. Wirelessly will take even longer. The only real option will be to put a small gigabit switch inside the entertainment center and then run cable up the wall, through the attic to the other side of the house (doable, but not friendly).

We watched the “Blu-Ray” version of Hancock today. ZOMFG!!!! It was perfect.

As it stands now, we have wire going through the Living Room and Kitchen, and will more than likely stay that way until I decide to fight the insulation up in the attic and just run the cabling. If I were still employeed at the Park, I’d call my cabling vendor and fly one of them down here to do it so I don’t have to :P

And yes, I’m putting a computer into Amante’s car. I got the idea when we were driving back from Myrtle Beach, and I was using an excel spreadsheet to calculate up to the minute information on the car’s performance (avg. speed/fuel consumption/etc…) during the trip. The initial design will be to have a small laptop hooked to the OBD-II diagnostic port to collect information on the car just like what a mechanic can see. I’ve also got a GPS system that connects to any computer via USB connection that would work just great. And then for the real long trips, I can have it display movies via a small LCD screen mounted somewhere in the dash.
